Technical Limitations and Narrative Priorities: Why Avowed Only Allows Human and Elf Characters

One of the unfortunate news about Avowed, an action RPG set in the Pillars of Eternity universe, is that players will only be able to create a character of two races: human or elf. This decision is due to the plot, where the protagonist acts as an envoy of the human-elven empire of Edir. Disappointing considering there are other attractive races in the setting like the Amauas, the Dwarves, and the cute Orlans.

However, according to game director Carrie Patel, in addition to the narrative, the technical difficulties associated with the first-person camera also influenced the choice. In a recent interview IGN She noted about this:

We want to offer a smooth and natural gameplay experience… In isometric designs, it’s easier to accommodate size variability.”

Although Amaua is about the same size, the Dwarves and Orlans pose far more problems.

For each race, especially with a first-person view, you have to adjust the height of the character’s capsule, the position of the weapon relative to the enemies, and how the blows land.

This sounds fair, although Obsidian cannot be called a small indie studio without resources. Is Microsoft really limiting its funding?

According to the developers, Avowed is aimed at realistic fights with physics, like in Vermintide, so the logic is that it is better to polish the gameplay for two races than to give more variations, but not live up to the feeling of the fights.

At Obsidian, Patel says, it’s primarily a matter of prioritization: “Obviously, none of these things can be solved; you just have to make choices and determine where to spend resources.”
