Technical inspection: big changes expected in Flanders. What regarding Wallonia and Brussels?
Contacted by our colleagues, the office of Walloon Minister Valérie De Bue confirms this information. “Flanders made this request during the Interministerial Mobility and Road Safety Committee last week. We did not refuse, but before going further in the discussions we asked him for several elements,” the firm explains to our colleagues. The ministry therefore does not yet know all the elements of this measure and would like to obtain more information on its implementation and its possible consequences.
Walloon technical inspection centers will keep their monopoly
In Brussels, the news seems to be less well received. Elke Van den Brandt, the Brussels Minister of Mobility, regrets a “lack of consultation” and fears that this will impact “the road safety of the three regions”, according to Sudinfo. She also regrets the lack of availability of her Flemish counterpart, Lydia Peeters, from whom she asked for “an analysis of road safety”. “No one likes to go to inspection, I understand that very well, but a gradual withdrawal of safety checks just to please the car lobby might have serious consequences for the safety of all of us on the road due to the poor condition vehicles of a small minority,” declares the Brussels minister. She also describes Flanders’ proposal to spread out the frequency of technical inspections for buses and coaches as “irresponsible”. “It sends shivers down my spine,” concludes the minister, who highlights the importance of child safety.
If this measure is so worrying in Wallonia and Brussels, it is because Belgian motorists can choose where to pass their check. Some might therefore be tempted to cross the linguistic border to benefit from the Flemish system.
In Wallonia, a bonus system is currently in force, the owner of a vehicle can thus receive a two-year certificate. But several conditions are necessary. The vehicle must be less than 6 years old. And when the vehicle is first presented within the legal time limit, it must display less than 100,000 km on the odometer and not present any significant defects.
