Technical error leads to incorrect election results for SPÖ party leader: Andreas Babler declared winner with 52.66 percent of the vote

Babeler won the election with 317 votes or 52.66 percent. The Burgenland Governor Hans Peter Doskozil received 280 votes, which corresponds to 46.51 percent. According to Grubesa, the votes were not counted incorrectly, but the results were mixed up. It is therefore a technical error.

The error happened when transferring to an Excel spreadsheet. The lists from the ballot boxes were brought together and fed into the system. The mistake happened: “The result was reversed,” says Grubesa. The fact that there was a recount at all on Monday followingnoon is due to the fact that one vote was missing from the officially announced result. This was found and was invalid. At the same time, it was discovered that the votes had been mismatched.

Grubesa admitted a serious mistake

According to Grubesa, he does not assume that the party congress will have to be repeated: “In my view, the whole process can be documented.” Ultimately, however, that is a matter for the committees. The chairman of the election commission apologized that the election commission had neglected to carry out a personal check – including Grubesa himself. Above all, she addressed her apology to Doskozil. Doskozil will also appear before the media shortly.

Congratulations from party colleagues

Party colleagues already congratulated Babler on Twitter. Above all, the Mayor of Vienna Michael Ludwig (SPÖ). “I congratulate Andi Babler. He is a committed, dynamic social democrat,” says Ludwig.

Others were surprised. “I warmly congratulate Andreas Babler,” tweeted former Chancellor Christian Kern (SPÖ). However, all of this confirms that “in politics you can’t think regarding it as stupidly as it comes followingwards”.

Baber 13th SPÖ party leader

With this correction, Traiskirchner mayor Babler is the thirteenth party leader of the SPÖ. Before Babler, there were eleven male chairpersons and one female chairperson, Pamela Rendi-Wagner. Rendi-Wagner did not appear at the special party conference on Sunday, June 3, following she had only come in third place behind Doskozil and Mayor and Federal Councilor Babler in the member survey for chairwoman and top candidate.

Babeler is SPÖ chairman

At more than 16 years, Bruno Kreisky was in office for the longest time in the history of the Austrian socialists and social democrats. He was followed by Adolf Schärf, who was at the helm for twelve years following the Second World War. The shortest-serving SPÖ chairman is Christian Kern, who has been in office for a good two years. Otherwise only Viktor Klima remained under a four-year period.
