Technical breakdown in Debrecen – Budapest Newspaper – 2024-07-16 14:47:24

Debrecen International Airport is expected to remain closed for at least a week for technical reasons.

The planes will either be diverted from Debrecen to the international airport “Ferenc Liszt” or cancelled without replacement, informed Budapest Airport Zrt. The airport operator points to a technical fault on the runway of the airport in Debrecen, the repair of which may take several days depending on the weather.

In the capital, around 55,000 passengers are currently processed at Ferihegy Airport every day, and the additional passenger volume from the diverted flights should not be a major factor. What appears to be more problematic is that air traffic as a whole is extremely prone to disruption this summer travel season anyway. BA Zrt. claims that security checks are less than 10 minutes even during peak times. The recent increase in delays is explained by the “overcrowding” of European airspace, which in turn is due to the closure of the flight corridor over Eastern Europe due to the war. In order to make the potentially significantly longer waiting time as pleasant as possible for travelers, new quiet zones have been set up at Budapest Airport.
