Team USA’s Victory over Canada in Rivalry Series: Hilary Knight’s Overtime Goal

Hilary Knight sunk Canada with the decisive goal in overtime to give the United States a 3-2 victory on Thursday night.

The 34-year-old veteran didn’t miss her chance by starting overtime on the power play, so the Americans now dominate the Rivalry Series 3-0 following also winning in Tempe and Los Angeles last month.

However, we should not count the Canadians as beaten since last season, they were trailing 3-0 in the best of seven series before coming back to win.

The next duel will take place on Saturday.

Ann-Renée Desbiens, who missed the first two games of the series because of an ankle injury, was in net and made 19 saves in the loss. She returned to the game a few days ago during the preparatory tournament of the Montreal team, in the Professional Women’s Hockey League.

After running out a power play with little chance to score, Canada scored the opening goal for the first time in three games of this series, at 7:36 of the first period. Julia Gosling served a nice pass to Danielle Serdachny, who beat Aerin Frankel with a good free shot at low ice.

The Americans took advantage of a turnaround to tie the game. Jaime Bourbonnais lost the puck in her zone while falling, then Kristen Simms recovered it and taunted another defender, Nicole Gosling, Julia’s cousin, before hitting the target.

After the Canadians failed to clear the territory, the United States came back just 63 seconds later to make it 2-1 thanks to Abbey Murphy.

Emily Clark evened the score in the second period by jumping on a loose puck in the goalie’s semi-circle.

Three players put on the maple leaf sweater for the first time: Nicole Gosling, Jennifer Gardiner and Anne Cherkowski.
