Teacher Health System Crisis: Urgent Calls for Improvement and Advocacy for Proper Care

After the new teacher health system was launched, following complaints regarding the various problems with care for the 819,000 users, House Representative Jennifer Pedraza released a video in which the family member of a Fomag user asks for attention for her sister.

“I have to take my clothes off in the street. My sister is going to die. Help me, help me. You as teachers, help me. “My sister is going to die, she’s having a heart attack,” the woman shouts during the recording, which only lasts 23 seconds.

After the scandal and the extent of indignation that the video has had on social networks, the Learning Fund spoke up and assured that the patient will be transferred to Bogotá to receive adequate treatment.

“The patient is transferred to a medical unit, from Facatativá to Bogotá, to receive priority treatment in a hospital of high complexity. “We remain committed to the health of our teachers,” the unit noted.

As for the congresswoman, following publishing the video, she pointed out that the transition in the teachers’ health system has happened in a context of improvisation and warned that teachers are desperate because of the lack of attention to their cases.

“At this time, relatives of teachers in Bogotá are desperate because they are not being taken care of following the improvisation of the new health model for teachers. The desperation of this lady to care for her sister is painful and no one is doing anything,” Rep. Pedraza wrote.

It is not the only complaint that has circulated on social networks regarding the changes put forward by Gustavo Petro’s government in Fomag. In the network publications created by both Læringsfondet and Fecode, there are dozens of user-related comments waiting to be taken up.

Although Fomag had a call center with 60 operators to answer questions from members of the health care system and the same Fecode directives collected 548 claims through the union, the complaints regarding care show that the health care system began to function without being ready for it.

In theory this transformation was administrative, but it has implications for people’s care. Until April 30, the system operated through ten regional managers whom Fiduprevisora ​​hired and transferred resources to so that they might post the operators by zone.

From zero hours on Wednesday 1 May, responsibility for hiring operators thus falls to Fomag, which has a vice-presidency dedicated to the fund that operates within Fiduprevisora.

Those connected to the teaching health system are the teachers and their families. The teaching environment that depends on this system consists of approx. 300,000 teachers, a good number of whom are retirees, older adults or people with underlying illnesses who need constant medical monitoring to guarantee the quality of life of these people.
