Teacher dropout in Táchira and Venezuela is approaching 80%

William Fernández, coordinator of the union coalition of educators of the state of Táchira, expressed his pConcern over increasing teacher desertion in the regionAccording to Fernandez, the 2023-2024 school year was particularly challenging due to the high rate of teacher attrition in classrooms.

«Last year a study was carried out to evaluate the development of pedagogical tasks through the teacher, and it was clear that There is a teacher desertion of 80% of the national population“He said. This phenomenon has seriously affected the state of Táchira, where many teachers have chosen to seek employment in the neighbouring country of Colombia, attracted by the possibility of obtaining a better salary.

Fernandez said that the desertion is mainly due to the “job persecution by some directors” and low wages“Today, a type 4 teacher earns approximately 22 dollars a month, which forces many to retire from their teaching jobs to look for alternatives that allow them to feed their families,” he explained.

This situation has a negative impact on the quality of education. “It is the children who are being left behind in their academic preparation,” he warned. “It is scary that our children will no longer have their teacher in subjects like chemistry, English or physics because they have had to drop out.”

Teachers became vendors and motorcycle taxi drivers to fight the economic situation

The coordinator also highlighted that many teachers have been forced to perform work unrelated to their trainingsuch as motorcycle taxi drivers or street vendors selling items from a catalogue. “We see many of our teachers going to school with a catalogue of products to sell, holding raffles or performing functions that have nothing to do with the teaching work for which they were trained,” he said.

Student dropout: another alarming figure

Student dropout is also a growing problem, as many families take their children with them when they emigrate. In addition, the majority of students attend private schools forces parents to find ways to finance their children’s education, which is especially difficult for teachers whose children attend public schools.

The union coalition of educators in the state of Táchira is asking the authorities to take urgent and effective measures to improve the working conditions and salaries of teachers, in order to guarantee quality education for all students.
