Higher education is one of the most insecure sectors of the British economy and, for many, it is a real obstacle course. As evidenced by the moving story of this young woman, relayed by the British news newspaper The Guardian in 2021. Teacher by day, homeless by night, she had to fight fiercely for two long years to hope to get out. Despite the anxiety and fear of living in her tent, she remained strong and determined to work hard to obtain her doctorate. To top it all off, none of her students ever guessed the situation in which she lived on a daily basis.
A very courageous teacher who commands respect
In an exclusive interview with The Guardian newspaper, Aimée Lê opened her heart, detailing the challenges that pushed her to make this radical choice. The teacher explained that due to her precarious financial situation, she might not afford to bear the heavy burden of rent. Because, although she was a researcher and professor, she only had a modest income which did not allow her to live adequately. However, the young woman did not want to give up, she demonstrated an unwavering determination to pursue her academic dream. No matter if she had to make many sacrifices to get there.
Aimée therefore made the courageous decision to settle near the campus of the famous “Royal Holloway University”, which is part of the prestigious University of London. Despite her difficult situation, she absolutely did not want it to affect her dreams or block the path she was pursuing: Aimée felt ready to do anything to avoid compromising her current doctorate and her future academic career in the United States. . But until then, she never expected to live in such terrible conditions. To say the least, his experience was far from comfortable.
Very difficult living conditions…
Staying in a tent under the stars, for many people, is an invigorating and exciting adventure. Of course, this lovely excursion must not exceed three or four days. Imagine living there for two years, that’s another matter entirely! And yet, this was indeed the daily life of this young teacher. It takes courage, patience and strong nerves to sleep in such an environment. Not far from campus, in the middle of nature, Aimée has set up a very small tent for one person. As you might expect, she was faced with freezing temperatures and difficult traffic conditions. She remembers, not without sadness, the days when she woke up to her tent covered in snow, a stark reminder of the reality of her daily life.
To relieve herself, Aimée used the university toilets and ate in public canteens. His cell phone had become his essential work tool. His precious book collection was well kept next to his bed. But the saddest part of the story was that she had carefully kept her homeless status a secret, hiding it from her superiors and students. Above all, she feared that her situation would harm her reputation and her academic goals. Even her parents were not told: she was ashamed to tell them where she lived, preferring to reassure them by telling them that she was staying comfortably on an organic farm.
A terrifying experience that nevertheless made her stronger
Faced with countless obstacles on her path and all the unimaginable challenges she had to overcome, Aimée voluntarily chose to share her painful experience with the whole world. She showed incredible courage in exposing her own vulnerability, but more importantly she wanted to shine a light on the importance of compassion and support for people facing similar circumstances. “It was a really scary experience. I discovered a protest camp near campus and asked permission to join them with my tent, so as not to be alone. This is how the next two years of my life began,” she says.
His story has been widely controversial.
She nevertheless retained the hope of finding a certain stability during her doctorate, but, despite all her efforts, Aimée only managed to land a few temporary contracts, and her financial situation remained difficult. So much so that following a while, she was finally forced to give up her weapons and return to live with her parents, while looking for more stable jobs.
Of course, Aimée’s journey has attracted public attention and sparked real debate regarding the precarious working conditions faced by many teachers in the UK. “It’s easy to look back and wonder if it was all worth it. If, as a migrant, I should have abandoned my Ph.D. Perhaps I should have realized that the situation would never improve,” she says resignedly. But, she feels proud to have shared everything she experienced. His story is a poignant reminder of the many struggles faced by all who pursue academic excellence in the midst of overwhelming challenges.
