You probably know the metros, stairs and underground escalators of the metro network in Lyon by heart. But do you know what it looks like underground? How is it organised? How are connecting stations connected?

More than 600 metro stations modeled

Guillaume Marcer had fun modeling more than 600 metro stations in major cities around the world, including Lyon. Thanks to its website, you can have fun discovering the face of the metro stations of the capital of Gaul, but also of Paris, Marseille, Barcelona, Madrid, London or Brussels.

“In this project, I was able to draw around 625 metro stations in different cities, mainly European ones. The motivation behind all this is the curiosity to know how there are so many lines under Puerta del Sol or Plaza de la Republique, to give just a few examples. So, for regarding 8 years, I have been sketching the seasons that intrigue me the most, ”explains the designer of the project.

Mainly single stations

Line A and B stations are usually single level with side platforms. Some stations have an underground passage connecting the two levels.

Line D runs at a slightly lower altitude than lines A and B, so the platforms are usually at level -2 and the concourse at level -1. This situation also occurs on the eastern section of line A, notes Guillaume Marcer.

The stations in Lyon are much simpler and less labyrinthine than those in Paris, Barcelona or London.

Bellecour, Old Lyon, Part-Dieu, Saxe-Gambetta…

He drew up the plans for the main Lyon stations, Bellecour (connections A and D), Perrache in the exchange center (metro A, tram T1 and 2, buses and car parks), Saxe-Gambetta (metro B and D), Hotel de Ville (metro A and C), Vaise station (metro D and TER) or Vieux-Lyon, the deepest station in the network, with line D and the two funiculars.
