T’choup Comedy Club: Bringing American-Style Stand-Up to Nice – A Rising Trend in French Comedy Clubs

2023-12-03 06:30:02

Jamel Debbouze made comedy clubs fashionable in France. In Nice too, comedians adept at American-style stand-up are getting organized. The proof, the big evening of the T’choup Comedy Club on the Stockfish stage, which will be broadcast on the reference radio, Rire et Chansons.

A few more microphones than usual. And there were lots of people, a full house, 200 people for this evening event.

For a year and a half the municipal hall of Stockfish in Nice hosts every other Wednesday the T’choup Comedy Club. This November 29, the casting is XXL: nine comedians from all over the region, Nice of course but also Marseille, Aix-en-Provence, and even Paris. The elite of rising comedians. Because you need level: this evening will be broadcast on December 16 on Laughter and Songsthe reference radio station for humor, which has 1 million listeners!

“When for months you have played in small venues, a show like this is a reward! It’s very gratifying”coward Arthur Perier. This author and stand-upper who created the Encore Comedy Club expressly made the trip to Nice for the evening, guest of T’choup.

His mission, for him and for the others, is to make the audience laugh in seven minutes flat. Humor and above all a lot of self-deprecation, an inspiration drawn from the little things in life, which means that the audience, inevitably, always finds themselves there. Comics that make you laugh at yourself in an intimate and relaxed atmosphere, that’s the recipe for comedy clubs.

The concept of comedy clubs was born in New York. And quickly found its way to France in big cities, in bars, small venues where we can play on the proximity between the artists and the public.

In Paris, it is obviously to Jamel Debbouze that we owe the rise of this type of show with the Jamel Comedy Club who every summer moves to Cannes for a few days.

After ten years of a successful career in Paris, the Fréjusien Maxime Riouboth a comedian and journalist, returned to his region with this idea in mind: importing the concept of comedy club to the South.

We started with small sets in bars, then we grew, today we celebrated the 5000th spectator here!

Here it is on the stage of Stockfish. This municipal performance hall opened its doors in March 2022, so it is very young, like the audience it addresses. Concerts, and very quickly the T’choup Comedy Club found its place there.

“In Nice there was no place at all to do stand-up. Here at Stockfish the artists found a nice room, and we realized that we had a lot of talented people in the region !” welcomes Robert Roux, deputy mayor in charge of culture in Nice.

And the talents come from the other end of the region to benefit from this 200-seat room which nevertheless maintains proximity between the artists and the public. For the XXL evening at T’choup, three ambassadors of Marseille humor: Ladop Amine, Quentin Friburgeret Sandra Miso, both boarders in Marseille from Garage Comedy Club.

Sandra Miso experienced the Montreux festival a few weeks ago. But for her this evening, in front of the Nice public, the evening is special:

On stage it’s like love. We give, we receive, it goes up… it’s great. This evening I fished the room!

An experience that they too have Baba Rudy or Dudley BBF :

As for the people of Nice who are historic residents of the T’choup Comedy Club, Thomas Santarelli et Pablo Caillaultthey enjoy, at home, the beautiful energy of the group:

There is always a lot of atmosphere at Stockfish. There is a kind of magic in this place. Every evening everyone has fun!

Sex, foreigners, obesity, gyms, feminism, no taboo in this show where everyone gives the best of themselves. With, also, the desire to be noticed.

“The very principle of T’choup is to reveal the nuggets of the South, and that Paris is interested in these personalities without them needing to go to Paris”explains Maxime Riou.

For some of them, notoriety is already there. Pablo Caillault has just joined Gad Elmaleh’s local troupe.

The T’choup Comedy Club is every other Wednesday at Stockfish in Nice.

Other comedy clubs have launched on the Côte d’Azur, such as Bobar Comedy Club in Nice or the Cosy Comedy Club in Antibes.
