Egypt inaugurates the Ben Ezra Synagogue following its restoration
Egyptian Prime Minister Dr. Mostafa Madbouly inaugurated (Thursday) the Ben Ezra Temple, following the completion of its restoration project. Ben Ezra is one of the oldest synagogues in Egypt, according to a statement by the Egyptian Cabinet.
The Egyptian Minister of Tourism and Antiquities, Ahmed Issa, said in the statement, “The project included careful architectural restoration work, as well as work to treat and prevent danger to the roofs of the temple, isolate surfaces with the best methods, clean and treat stones, and re-coordinate the site in an appropriate manner that allows visual vision of the monument, in addition to maintenance.” The entire lighting system, the cleaning of copper and iron units and marble columns, as well as the work of restoring antique decorations and the library.

The discovery of the “Geniza” dates back to 1890, during restoration operations in the temple, following the collapse of the ceiling of a room inside it, which is a closed room on all sides except for the top, where books and papers were stored for a long time until they were discovered and transferred to the British University of Cambridge.
The Ben Ezra Temple is attributed to Abraham Ben Ezra in the 12th century AD, and it was rebuilt in the 19th century. The most spacious of them, there are two platforms, the first is known as the “Miracle Atlas”, and the second is the “Pima” prayer platform.
