PEWAMO, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) —
Eastern Michigan University volleyball incoming signee Taylor Smith was named the 2023 Michigan Miss Volleyball presented by the Detroit Free Presstoday, Nov. 13, marking the first time in program history an incoming signee has received the honor.
“What an honor for Taylor”, said head coach Kevin Foeman. “It is truly well deserved for such a wonderful person and player. I can’t wait to see Taylor in Green and White soon.”
The honor, in its 20th year, is a Michigan Interscholastic Volleyball Coaches Association award, voted on by coaches statewide. Smith won with 165 points in voting, followed by Grandville’s Zoey Dood (153 points), North Branch’s Hailey Green (128), Clarkston’s Cayla Cogan (123), and Hudsonville’s Isabelle Swiercz (120). All-together, only 10 high school members were finalist for this year’s award with Smith taking home the prize.
When speaking to the press, Foeman said, “She is the perfect fit for us, she plays hard, and she’s a kid with a big heart. She has good size, she’s a good blocker, and she can set. But most importantly, she’s a good kid, with a good family. She’s a good, blue-collar worker. She just fits right into the system for us, for the coaches, for what we’re trying to build. She’s a perfect cornerstone type to help build this program,” he finished.
Smith will join the Eagles for the 2024 season as an incoming freshman. Currently, she and her Pewamo-Westphalia teammates, the defending Division III state champs, are preparing for Tuesday’s state quarterfinal once morest Kalamazoo Christian.
As for Foeman and the rest of the Eagles, the team is scheduled to wrap up the 2023 season at Central Michigan University Wednesday, Nov. 15, at 6 p.m. inside the McGuirk Arena.
