Taxes: how to correct an error in your declaration

2023-08-01 16:48:19

The first tax notices have arrived and with them, the balance of refunds from which you will benefit, or additional payments that you will have to make, depending on the case. This year, more than 15 million taxpayers should have the opportunity to rejoice since they will be in the first case according to the elements communicated by the General Directorate of Public Finances (DGFiP). But 9.6 million French people will be in the second case… And forced to pay a balance.

Does this mean that the declaration you sent last May or June, concerning your income received in 2022, is immutable? Not necessarily. Because if you realize an oversight or an error, there is still time to rectify it. For example, if you forgot to report a donation made to an association (which entitles you to a tax benefit), to request a reduction linked to your child’s schooling, or on the contrary, to declare a sum that you have received or an account opened in an online bank established abroad. These changes might already be reported before the final validation of your document. From this Wednesday, August 2, they will be possible once more with the opening of the online telecorrection service.

When it is activated, all you have to do is connect to your particular space, on the site impots.gouv.frand click on “Access the online correction”, before modifying the erroneous elements – by correcting the amounts initially entered and by checking or unchecking the boxes concerned – then confirming.

No need to worry as the “Manage my real estate” space encounters many bugs: according to the DGFiP, which confirms the opening this Wednesday, users will have “no worries” to connect to their space.

A procedure to be done from a computer

Please note that this procedure is not compatible with a smartphone or tablet. You have to do it from a computer. And telecorrection is not possible if you wish to report a change in family situation (marriage, Pacs, divorce, death, etc.). “In this case, you must send a paper declaration to your tax office. Or request the modification via the secure messaging system of your private space on the tax site”, indicates Thibault Diringer, consultant and trainer, author of the Corrigetonimpot.fr site.

Once your document has been corrected, a confirmation email will be sent to you. Then a new tax notice will be issued. Two scenarios: either your new declaration results in a reduction in the amount to be paid. “The public treasury will then refund you the difference compared to what you paid. If he has your bank details, it will be by bank transfer; failing that, you will receive a check letter”, specifies Thibault Diringer. “If the correction increases the tax, the administration will tell you the amount you have to pay with the deadline to respect”.

Start the process to avoid an increase

Initiating this correction process yourself allows you to avoid the 10% increase normally provided for in the event of late payment. On the other hand, you remain in principle liable for late payment interest (0.2% per month), reduced by half under the Essoc law of 2018 (simplification of administration).

According to the information available on the tax website, the online correction service will be active until December 7. After this period, only a paper amending declaration sent to your public finance center, or via the secure messaging service in your Individual space on the Impots.gouv.fr website, will allow the changes to be taken into account. For the 2023 tax return (on 2022 income), they are possible until December 31, 2025.
