Question from Matthew
Can I correct my tax return following the deadline has passed?
Hello Matthew,
It is indeed possible to correct your tax return in case of omission or error. This rectification is possible, provided that certain criteria are met.
First, the website impots.gouv.fr indicates that it is preferable to make this correction before the filing deadline. After this deadline, the correction will lead to the publication of a new tax notice, and therefore additional delays.
The steps to follow depend on the type of declaration you have filed, digital or paper.
Online declaration
The correction will be possible for you following receipt of your tax notice, provided that your return was filed before the deadline.
You will have from Saturday August 2 to Thursday September 7 to correct or complete your declaration by connecting to your “private space”, on the impots.gouv.fr website. A new tax notice will be issued, as mentioned above.
Some items cannot be corrected on the online correction service:
– a change in family situation (divorce, death, marriage, etc.),
– a change of address,
– an update of the marital status,
– the designation of a trusted third party.
You can inform the government service of these changes through the site’s messaging service.
Paper declaration
In the case of a physical declaration, the rules change because the online correction service is no longer concerned.
Once the filing deadline has passed, you can still request a correction. Three solutions are available to you.
– File a complaint online or by post (until December 31, N+2);
– telephone your public finance centre;
– go to your personal tax department.
