Tax Increase on Groceries and Fuel in Illinois: What You Need to Know

When you do your grocery shopping or fill up your gas tank starting this Saturday, July 1, you may have to pay a little more, since the state tax on groceries and fuels restarts.

As of July 2022, Illinois has suspended the low 1% tax rate for groceries that must be consumed off-premises. The measure approved by the state government was part of a plan to help families alleviate the financial consequences on homes due to inflation.

According to the Illinois Department of Revenue, for a grocery bill of $145.29, a 1% tax would add $1.45.

THIS WILL COST GASOLINE FROM JULY 1 IN ILLINOIS

In addition to the reinstatement of the 1% tax on groceries, the fuel tax will also be added, which had been delayed for six months in 2022.

As of this July 1, the gallon of gasoline in Illinois will cost more, it will increase to 45.4 cents per gallon, while filling diesel fuel will increase from 3.1 cents to 52.9 cents per gallon.

From July 1, 2023 to June 30, 2024 fuel prices per gallon in Illinois will be:

gasoline/gasohol – $0.454 per gallon diesel fuel – $0.529 per gallon liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) – $0.529 per gallon liquefied natural gas (LNG) – $0.529 per gallon compressed natural gas (CNG) – $0.454 per gallon

INCREASES THE MINIMUM WAGE IN COOK COUNTY AND CHICAGO

In addition to the reinstatement of taxes on groceries and fuels, will increase the minimum wage in Cook County and the city of Chicago as of this July 1, 2023.

Workers earning the minimum wage of $13.35 per hour, who do not receive tips, will now be paid $13.70 per hour.

While employees who make $7.40 per hour and earn tips will now receive $8 per hour.

In the city of Chicago the minimum hourly wage will increase from $15.40 to $15.80 for employees who work in companies with 21 or more workers.

While, employees of companies that have between 4 and 20 workers will receive an increase from $14.50 to $15, according to the state government.

As for employees who receive tips, the minimum wage will increase from $9.24 to $9.48 for employees of large companies, while in small companies, the increase will be from $8.70 to $9.
