Tauernautobahn: Traffic jam refugees bring traffic to a standstill in Tennengau communities

What started on Thursday continued on Friday: There was a big traffic jam on the Tauern motorway, and many drivers switched to the main road. And that had and still has consequences.

The distance on the Tauern Autobahn from Salzburg towerfen is around 43 kilometers. These would usually be completed in just over half an hour. On Friday followingnoon (3 p.m.), travelers had to expect a travel time of almost two and a half hours. The first large columns of traffic had already appeared on Thursday followingnoon, and progress was very slow.

The reason for this is the tunnel construction sites and the first ski vacationers who were heading towards Pongau. This in turn meant that numerous drivers switched to the main road and thus became traffic jam refugees.

The communities of Hallein, Kuchl and Golling were once once more affected, through which the sheet metal avalanches moved at a walking pace at best. The Salzachtal federal road (B 159) was marked dark red on online traffic services in Kuchl and Golling on Friday followingnoon, just like the A 10.

That means traffic jams. And that means criticism of the checks on the exit barriers, which Asfinag rejects: Several teams of traffic managers are on duty at the Hallein, Kuchl and Golling junctions. The regulation on departure closures provides for winter tourism. If, for example, skiers head for the Dachstein West region via Kuchl and Golling, they are free to do so in terms of destination traffic.
