SAN DIEGO (AP) — Fernando Tatis Jr. had three hits, scored one and pumped up the crowd in his return to Petco Park, while Ha-Seong Kim hit a tiebreaking three-run homer in an 8-3 win on Monday for the San Diego Padres over the Cincinnati Reds, their third win in a row.
The stadium was already in a festive atmosphere for Tatis’ first home game since Sept. 26, 2021, when Kim homered to left field off Alex Young with two outs in the fifth inning to make it 6-3.
Juan Soto and Manny Machado each added a two-run hit and Trent Grisham added three more hits for the Padres. Blake Snell (1-4) fended off danger for six innings of work to win, while Reds starter Luke Weaver (1-1) took the loss following giving up four runs and nine hits in 4 innings and one third.
Tatis was cheered on several times following missing all of last season. The Dominican shortstop was on the brink of a comeback from a broken left wrist — reportedly suffered in a motorcycle accident in the Dominican Republic — when he was suspended 80 games on Aug. 12 for testing positive for a performance-enhancing drug. He attributed the positive to a cream he said he used to treat ringworm.
Tatis was activated on April 20, when the Padres began a nine-game road trip.
For the Reds, Cuban José Barrero 3-0.
For the Padres, the Dominicans Fernando Tatis Jr. 5-3 with a run scored; Juan Soto 4-2 with two RBIs.
