Tarek William Saab: At any moment María Corina Machado could be charged

Tarek William Saab, Attorney General of the Republic, said that at any time they could to charge opposition leader Maria Corina Machado for the events that occurred in the context of the protests against the official results of the presidential election.

«Today, Venezuelans hold her responsible for all these deaths, which have been killed in situations that cannot be described as protests,” The official said in an interview with journalist Eligio Rojas. “At any time, any of them could be held responsible as the masterminds behind all these events,” he added.

Saab spoke about the website where the democratic opposition published the digitalized minutes of the presidential elections, which would confirm that Edmundo González Urrutia won with almost 70% of the votes.

The prosecutor, an openly pro-Chavez activist, said there were irregularities in the reports.

“All the signatures are identical, the minutes are scanned, blurry. The aim was to impress people’s minds and justify the protests, so to speak, because they are terrorist actions,” he said.

Saab also said that a “repair is underway” Investigation against Maria Corina Machado in 2004 for “conspiracy” due to his alleged connection with “foreign entities” for the recall against President Hugo Chávez.

«It is always the same modus operandi: using Súmate, flat signatures, I would now call them, flat minutes to, under the excuse of fraud, misuse an electoral opportunity that Venezuela gives you to conspire. “That investigation, as well as others that we have opened, the calls for police and military groups to rebel against the State, are ongoing,” he said.

What were the deaths during the protests, according to Saab?

The Attorney General also said that the number of people who died during the protests in the post-election context rose to 27. According to him, approximately 70% of the deaths occurred between 6:00 and 10:00 pm on July 29.

The official said on Saturday that two people died in alleged “traffic accidents caused” by “terrorists” blocking the roads.

“An action planned by this sector of the extreme right, which It has liquefied all the failed experiences that Venezuela has lived through in terms of coups d’état, riots, the attempted lawfare, “Because by saying that there was fraud and that the defeated party supposedly won, they wanted to find a way out by calling on the Armed Forces, the police, and public institutions. I am referring to the masterminds,” he said.
