The Dutch production of solar power will once more increase enormously in 2022. We obtained 46 percent more electricity from sunlight than a year earlier, and even three times as much as in 2019.

The production of solar power on the roofs of homes grew slightly faster than on company roofs and in solar parks, according to figures from Statistics Netherlands. This shows that the number of solar panels on homes has increased slightly faster than on companies.

Yet the bulk of solar energy comes from large-scale installations. About 40 percent of the Dutch solar power is generated by households.

The municipality of Dronten accounted for the largest growth in solar capacity last year. The largest solar park in the Netherlands was opened in Biddinghuizen, with no fewer than 328,000 panels. These can provide regarding 44,000 households with electricity.

The Netherlands has the highest number of solar panels per capita of all European countries. We generate almost as much solar energy as the much larger France. On sunny days we therefore also export a lot of electricity to neighboring countries.
