Tape storage is far from dead. It can even break storage capacity records. This is precisely the case with the brand new tape developed by IBM and Fujifilm.

Born in the 1960s, magnetic tape storage is one of the dinosaursdinosaurs of computing. And yet, in data centers data centers, despite the abundance of storage systems on SSDs or mechanical disks, tapes are resisting resisting. These systems make it possible to carry out additional security safeguards in the event of major problems. While their drives are rather expensive, the tapes themselves are still very cheap compared to their enormous storage capacity. You should know that innovation continues even if this support might seem outdated at first.

In any case, this is proven by the brand new tape developed by IBM and Fujifilm. This tape has a storage capacity of 50 TB with a raw throughput of 400 MB/s. This capacity can even be multiplied by three if the data is compressed. This is a record for the moment, even if the two partners already designed an experimental tape capable of storing up to 580 TB of data, a few years ago, using strontium-strontium ferrite particles. The concern remains that no player on the market is compatible with this technology. But today, this 50 TB tape is precisely intended for the tape cartridge 3592 JF from IBM that works with the TS1170 drive without requiring any modifications.

Up to 150 TB capacity

To achieve this density, the two partners mixed magnetic particles of strontium ferrite (SrFe) and baryumbaryum ferrite (BaFe). These hybrid-hybrid nanoparticles are much smaller and allow for much more storage capacity per square inch. Despite an identical cartridge, the tape itself is 15% larger, because the film on which the magnetic layer rests is thinner. In addition, it is even more resistant. However, this exceptional capacity used in backup cannot compete with other storage media. Recording and reading data is too slow for this and the systems are cumbersome. But tapes, in addition to their exceptional storage capacity, are also nearly impossible to pirate when the cartridges are not in their drive.
