(Ecofin Agency) – With a view to bringing the first section of its standard gauge network into operation, Tanzania is beginning to build the fleet of trains that will provide travel.

The Tanzania Railway Corporation has received a new batch of 6 double-decker rail cars, delivered by the German company Lückemeier Transport & Logistik GmbH. The latter has a total order of 30 units from the Tanzania Railway Authority.

The 6 units consist of 4 second class carriages with a capacity of 123 passengers each and 2 third class carriages with a capacity of 140 passengers. They are the second wave of cars received by TRC following the delivery in November 2022 of 14 of the 59 units ordered from South Korean manufacturer Sung Shin Rolling Stock Technology Limited (SSRST).

These acquisitions are part of the upcoming launch of the commercial services of the Tanzanian SGR network in development since 2017. The first section of 202 km is fully completed and the next phase, that of technical tests, should begin next July, according to the government.

4 other sections are being developed to give substance to a 1,219 km network. This infrastructure should be supplemented by other lines open to neighboring countries such as Uganda, Burundi and the DRC.
