Tang Xiaoou, known as China’s AI leader and founder of Tang Technology, has been confirmed to have passed away on December 15 at the age of 55. According to media reports, many bloggers on China’s Weibo claimed that Tang Xiaoou jumped to his death from a building. However, SenseTime Technology issued an obituary yesterday (12/16), stating that Tang Xiaoou passed away due to ineffective treatment for illness.
Tang Xiaoou was born in Anshan, Liaoning in 1968. He graduated from the University of Science and Technology of China in 1990. He received his PhD from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1996 and then worked at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. In 2014, he established the artificial intelligence company SenseTime. Tang Xiaoou is mainly engaged in research in computer vision-related fields, including multimedia, computer vision, pattern recognition and video processing.

According to media reports, the “face recognition” technology invented by Tang Xiaoou is the world’s first computer algorithm that surpasses the recognition capabilities of the human eye. However, because “face recognition” was accused of being used to monitor Xinjiang Muslims and violate human rights, SenseTime was included in the U.S. export control entity list, and in December 2021, it was listed as an investment by the U.S. Treasury Department as a “Chinese military-industrial complex enterprise” blacklist.
In the 2021 Hurun Rich List, Tang Xiaoou is still ranked 420th on the list of China’s richest people, with a net worth of 17 billion yuan at that time. However, in June 2022, SenseTime’s share price was “cut in half”, and Tang Xiaoou lost almost half of his wealth.

Some of them claimed that Tang Xiaoou died by jumping from a building. However, on the afternoon of the 16th, SenseTime Technology officially released an obituary. Tang Xiaoou, the founder of SenseTime Technology, died at 23:45 on December 15, 2023 due to ineffective treatment. It also refuted relevant rumors.
