What a magical night City of Buenos Aires. Like the lyrics of “Magic City“, one of his hymns, Tan Biónica provided an unforgettable evening at the River stadium. With luxury guests like Miranda!, Nicki Nicole, Abel Pintos and Airbag and through a review of his entire musical career, the band made up of Santiago “Chano” and Gonzalo “Bambi” Moreno Charpentier, along with Sebastián “Seby” Seoane and Diego “Diega” Lichtenstein made the Núñez neighborhood vibrate before more than 80 thousand spectators.
“Tan Biónica is back and will soon give you one last magical night in a stadium in Buenos Aires,” Chano had announced on the first night of Lollapalooza 2023. In this way, the tour began “The last magical night tour“, with which the group already performed two recitals in Vélez Sarsfield and two shows at the Estadio Único in La Plata, to which River joined on the night of December 8. With five stadiums completely sold out, where they sold more than 276,879 tickets, Tan Biónica became the Argentine band that sold the most tickets in 2023.
Although River was the closing of the first stage of the tour, Tan Biónica will return to the stage before the end of the year and in the first quarter of 2024 since the tour expanded both nationally and internationally. Their next destinations are Punta del Este (Uruguay), Mar del Plata, San Bernardino (Paraguay), Córdoba City and Montevideo (Uruguay).
Tan Biónica in Vélez: the return of a national music icon following seven years in “silence”
“I think that any musician who was born in Argentina, at least once in their life dreams of playing in River and this is possible thanks to you. I will be grateful to you all my life,” Chano expressed excitedly in the middle of the night and before the stadium audience. After more than twenty years of career and with an impasse in the middle of six years, Tan Biónica fulfilled her dream and played the Monumental for the first time along with a set composed of triangular screens and lights, columns of fire and smoke, rain of papers and illuminated balls.
Shortly following 9 p.m., The lights went out and the usual intro to bionic shows began to play.: “Seven Nation Army“, by The White Stripes. In the midst of the chorus and the screams of those present, one by one the members of the quartet appeared on stage, who were applauded by the audience. The last to come up was Chano, who seemed moved by the call and the outbreak of the “Bionic Piberius” (name of his fans) in his presence.
A review of his career with surprise guests
The first song of the night, as was usual in the concerts of this tour, was “Hi my love“, from the fourth – and last album to date – Hello World (2015). The lyrics of the song promise “a tremendous night”, which was honored by Tan Biónica in the almost two and a half hours that the recital lasted. Then it was the turn of “Beautiful“(from the second album, Obsessive -2010-), where on the screens you might read the name of the song in the chorus, and “Music“(from the third album, Destinology -2013-).
The fourth song was “Loca“, for which Chano sat at the end of the catwalk and sang the first verses alone with the piano, but not before thanking those present in Buenos Aires for allowing him to fulfill his dream of playing in River. They continued with “perfect lives“, which was followed by a short DJ set performed by Diega. In that short electro interlude, the drummer mixed iconic songs of the band, such as “Community” y “The hurricane“, while silver papers rained down and the audience danced and bounced huge illuminated balls.
A few moments later, Bambi appeared with an acoustic guitar and the atmosphere of the stadium changed. The bassist played “Oblivion pills“, while the screens showed his image next to some pills, in honor of the title of the song. After finishing, he thanked the audience for being present and dedicated a few words to his brother Chano, in one of the most emotional moments of the night: “We are a group of friends who dreamed of getting here one day. We want to invite to the stage an artist, a poet who for me is one of the gems of his generation, who has an enormous heart, more monumental than this field and who has known how to take the destinies of this group always forward. “I want to receive Chano on stage with a strong applause.”
In the midst of the chorus and applause, Chano returned to the stage and hugged his brother, visibly moved. “Thank you Bambi for the nice things, you are the best brother anyone might have had. If I might live once more I would try to have nice dreams, be a good person, be a good brother, be a good boyfriend, be a good son. You already know the things that happened to me and maybe I am alive thanks to you, because you prayed for me. I pray for you every night,” said the singer through tears and with a broken voice.
After touching “The things that happen“, it was the turn of the second surprise of the night. Abel Pintos appeared on stage to sing with Chano “Obsessionary in La Mayor“. The performance included the special addition of an acoustic chorus while the Monumental was illuminated by cell phone flashlights, at the request of both performers.
“I want to congratulate you and thank you for this special meeting. I want to congratulate you on this and all the magical nights you were experiencing to the Bionic Piberio, who for so many years believed, waited and endured to be present in each of these shows“said the man from Bahia before leaving the scene. The last song of the first round was “The die is cast“, which was played on piano by Bambi and chanted by the entire audience.
The acoustic round: an intimate moment with the audience full of nostalgia
Almost halfway through the show, the band lowered the revs for a moment for an acoustic set who played on a small stage set up in the middle of the field and surrounded by the crowd. Before starting to play, the members remembered their beginnings, mentioning that their first show was “on a smaller stage than this one.”
After recalling the past and briefly mentioning Chano’s solo career, it was the turn of “a song for a person who may be here, a song for Clara.” Just like that, it started to ring”Clearly“ (Chano’s solo theme) accompanied by the audience’s singing. The other tracks selected for the acoustic moment were “poem of the heavens“, “Salad” y “bionic girl“.
The third special guest was Nicki Nicole, “the one” as Chano defined it, who acknowledged being a fan of the group. Just like on the second night of Vélez, they sang “Painted mouths“, a very special song for fans of the first hour since it was written more than 20 years ago, even before the band was called Tan Biónica, and it never made it to the recording studio. The track was performed twice due to that the Rosario woman was moved when she sang. The spectacle was crowned with “God’s melody“, perhaps the band’s most iconic song and which gives November 4th a special connotation for the entire Piberio Bionico. The stage erupted in screams as Chano sang and invited the audience to sing the verses with him.
