Tamron launches first lens for Nikon Z: the 4.5-6.3/70-300mm (updated)

A 4.5-6.3/70-300 mm III RXD is already available for Sony’s E bayonet (test in fM 6/21, very good, optics: 77%, mechanics: 84%). According to Tamron, the Nikon variant is largely identical to that for Sony, with the exception of an additional USB-C socket.

The new full-frame lens has a moisture-resistant construction and the BBAR coating (Broad-Band Anti-Reflection) developed by Tamron, which prevents quality-impairing reflections inside the lens barrel. In addition, it can be used with the special Tamron Lens Utility software to import updates quickly and easily, even without a camera.

The lens is relatively light (580 g, Sony variant: 545 g) and slim (77 mm diameter like Sony). As with Sony, the optical system comprises 15 elements in ten groups, including an LD (Low Dispersion) element to correct longitudinal chromatic aberration and other optical errors that typically occur with telephoto focal lengths. Tamron promises that the resolution should be very high, even at 300 mm, right into the corners of the image.

Silent auto focus

As usual with the new Tamrion lenses, an RXD stepper motor (Rapid eXtra-silent stepping drive) is unfortunately used for the autofocus, which means that the lens is also suitable for video recordings. The 70-300 mm does not have its own image stabilizer, but of course it works together with the stabilizers – if available – in the cameras. For owners of DX cameras (Z50, From fc, Z30) this should be a decisive disadvantage, since they do not have an image stabilizer.

Tamron has not yet named a price. The Sony version is currently available at a street price of around 500 euros.

Update on September 6th: The Tamron 4.5-6.3/70-300 mm will go on sale on September 29th.
