Tamron launches an updated version of its iconic 90mm macro lens

Tamron 90mm F2.8 Di III Macro VXD

The new Tamron 90mm F/2.8 Di III Macro VXD is a versatile macro lens designed for both Sony E-mount and Nikon Z-mount mirrorless full-frame cameras. It provides outstanding image quality with 1:1 imaging scale, making it perfect for close-up photography and portraiture.

In 1979, Tamron introduced its first 90mm macro lens, the SP 90mm F/2.5, which revolutionized macro photography with its superior image quality and stunning bokeh. Nicknamed “Tamukyu” among photographers, Tamron’s macro series of 90mm lenses has since evolved with a series of acclaimed models, including the SP 90mm F/2.8 Di Macro 1:1 VC USD in 2016. Now, 45 years later, Tamron is launching the latest mirrorless the version that combines classic performance with cutting-edge technology.

  • Superior optical performance: The new 90mm F/2.8 macro lens, just like previous versions, has exceptional image quality. With 15 elements in 12 groups, including four LD (Low Dispersion) elements, the lens effectively minimizes spherical and chromatic aberrations, providing sharp resolution across the entire frame. The BBAR-G2 coating minimizes ghosting and flare and provides sharp detail sharpness even in backlight. The lens provides beautifully soft bokeh and striking subject isolation, perfect for both portrait and macro photography.

  • Macro performance with high precision: With an imaging scale of 1:1 and a close limit (MOD) of 0.23m, the lens is excellent for macro photography. It is well suited for so-called flatfield photography, making it ideal for capturing artwork, documents and products with sharpness across the entire image and even lighting.

  • 12-blade circular aperture: Tamron’s first ever 12-blade circular aperture produces stunning circular bokeh, even at large apertures. This unique design also creates beautiful 12-beam starburst effects when shooting point light sources.

  • Compact and lightweight: With a length of only 126.5mm (Sony) and a weight of 630g, the lens is designed to be easy to carry and use. The compact lens allows for easy and convenient handling, making it ideal for field work and travel.

  • Advanced features for versatility: The lens is equipped with Tamron’s linear focus motor VXD (Voice-coil eXtreme-torque Drive) and offers fast, accurate and quiet autofocus. The lens also features a Focus Limiter switch for faster focusing, a Focus Set button for feature customizations, and is compatible with the Tamron Lens Utility for software updates and customizations.

  • Durable construction: The lens is built for demanding environments with moisture-resistant construction and a fluorine coating that protects the front element from dirt, water and oil, ensuring reliability in the field.

  • New lens hood: The 90mm F2.8 Macro comes with a newly designed hood with a flap for easy filter adjustment. This allows photographers to rotate filters such as PL and ND without having to remove the hood, solving a common problem.
