Chennai: School teachers in the state can wear churidar to work. Education Minister Anpil Mahesh Poiyamozhi gave the green light to the long-standing demand. The minister said that teachers working in government schools can wear saree and churidar as per their choice. The minister clarified that it is up to each person to decide what to wear, subject to the rules.
It has been suggested that teachers should wear saris in schools in Tamil Nadu. Male teachers come to school wearing pants and shirt or t-shirt and shirt. Even teachers’ organizations came forward demanding that women teachers be allowed to wear churidar, but no positive response was received from the Education Department.
As per the order issued in June 2019 regarding the dress code of government employees, it was specified that clean and office-appropriate clothes can be worn. The order stated that female employees can wear saris, salwar kameez, churidar and dupatta, while male employees can wear pants-shirt, dhoti or any clothing that reflects Indian culture. Following this order, the teachers approached the Education Department for permission to wear churidar, but the demand was not accepted.
It is in this situation that the minister came up with the process of accepting the demand of the teachers. He said that women teachers can wear clothes of their choice including saree and churidar. According to the law, the employees have the right to choose what to wear, the minister said while attending the ‘Kanavashriar’ award ceremony. In Kerala, teachers were allowed to wear churidar years ago.
