Tamamal of Srinagar who became a belly dancer at the behest of his girlfriend

Belly dance is predominantly a women’s dance, but Peerzada Tajumal, from the remote Indian-administered Kashmir, is Kashmir’s ‘only’ male belly dancer trying to make a future in the field.

Pirzada Tajmal lives in Runan Qaziabad in Kupwara District and holds the distinction of being Kashmir’s ‘first’ male belly dancer. The 24-year-old young artist is mastering belly dance and is also training many youngsters in belly dance.

By the way, Pirzada Tajamal was fond of dance and music since Bachchan, but after the death of his girlfriend, he learned belly dance to fulfill her desire.

Talking to Independent Urdu, Pirzada Tajamal said that ‘Many years ago I fell in love with a girl. She is no longer in this world. She wanted to become a belly dancer but her parents did not allow her.’

‘Before he died he wished me to fulfill his passion.’

He explains that since ‘I was fond of dance and music, initially I faced a lot of difficulties in learning belly dance. There was some information about it, but I didn’t give up and mastered the art with the help of YouTube.’

Pirzada Tajamal initially faced strong opposition from her father but Tajamal accepted the challenge and with courage and determination not only succeeded in learning belly dance but also became the ‘first male’ belly dancer of Kashmir. Create a distinct identity.

He says that he used to get beaten by his father every day. He also wanted to study but was not allowed. I had to listen to abuse from people, I was called a transgender and many times death threats were also given.

‘At that time I felt strange and I cried. I didn’t know if I would be able to move forward with this thing. But with the passage of time, everything started to get better. My videos went viral and people started to know me as a male belly dancer and my work was appreciated. The abuse received by the people turned into applause.

According to Peerzada, it is mainly a women’s dance, because of which many things were heard in the society, but without listening to anyone, I went ahead and everything is fine today.

‘I am the first belly dancer of Kashmir and will remain till the end no matter how many come after me.’

Tajmal loves the dances of Haryanvi dancer Sapna Chaudhary and Moroccan-Canadian model and dancer Nora Fathi and likes to imitate the facial expressions of these artists.

He says that I am very inspired by the dance of Sapna Chaudhary and Nora Fatehi and want to become a great stage dancer like Sapna Chaudhary.

This artist who broke gender stereotypes has so far gained appreciation from people in many states as well as abroad by showing her dance talent.
