Tallinn summoned a representative of the Russian Federation to the carpet due to jamming of the GPS signal

According to Estonian Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna, Russian interference in satellite navigation has increased, it is causing confusion and has a major impact on civil aviation. “With this action, Russia violates the radio communications rules of the International Telecommunication Union, according to which it is prohibited to create this kind of interference, and we conveyed this message to the Russian Charge d’Affaires,” Tsahkna said.

“GPS jamming is one element of Russian hybrid activity that disrupts our normal lives and poses a threat to the security of allies, as do violent incidents, cyber attacks and disinformation campaigns orchestrated by Russia,” Tsahkna said.

According to the minister, by jamming the GPS signal, Russia caused serious damage to air traffic in the region, the most striking manifestation of which was the suspension of flights between Helsinki and Tartu.

The Foreign Secretary has spoken regarding the dangers of GPS jamming with EU member states and NATO allies, and the issue was raised by the North Atlantic Council last week.

Russia’s hybrid activities are a growing problem in Europe and elsewhere. This week, several European countries summoned senior Russian diplomats in connection with hybrid and cyber attacks from Russia.
