Several people were shot and two men died early Sunday in the parking lot of the Parkway Center shopping center on Apalachee Parkway.

The Tallahassee Police Department said the double homicide happened shortly before 2:30 a.m. Sunday in the 1100 block of Apalachee Parkway.

The mass shooting comes as residents, officials and first responders continue to grapple with the impact of the twin tornadoes that hit wide swathes of Tallahassee with winds as high as 100 mph.

THE USA TODAY NETWORK and Tallahassee Democrat define a mass shooting as an incident in which at least four people are struck by gunfire, even if there are no fatalities.

A TPD watch commander told the Democrat that none of the businesses were open at the time and that the shooting took place outside. Businesses in the mall reported as late as Saturday night that they were still without power after Friday’s tornadoes left much of the city in the dark.

At least a dozen officers were still on the scene several hours after the shooting took place. Crime scene tape was clearly visible in the parking lot.

TPD said in a social media post that a call came in around 2:23 a.m. about shots fired.

“Officers arrived on scene and located several victims with gunshot wounds,” TPD said. “Unfortunately, two adult men were pronounced dead at the scene. Two other adult victims were transported to a local hospital with gunshot wounds. However, their condition is unknown.”

TPD has not said if there are any suspects at large or if anyone has been arrested or taken into custody.

“This remains an open and active investigation, and updates will be provided as more information becomes available,” TPD said.

The Tallahassee Democrat asked TPD spokespeople the following questions, but there was no immediate response.

  • Is there a suspect or arrests?
  • Should citizens be wary of a suspect on the loose?
  • Is this considered an isolated incident?
  • Was there a crowd on the premises before the mass shooting?
  • Do we believe that the victims are the intended targets of the shooting?

So far in 2024, 13 people have been killed and 23 injured in 30 shootings in Tallahassee and Leon County, according to A Tallahassee Democrat Analysis of Gun Violence.
