Talks with Russia: Ukraine wants security guarantees

The foreign policy adviser to the President of Ukraine stressed that in negotiations with Russia Ukraine is seeking security guarantees for the future. “We want this situation to never be repeated,” Ihor Showkwa told ARD yesterday. In the negotiation rounds, considerations were recently made “regarding a possible peaceful solution, possible security guarantees for Ukraine following the end of the hostilities”.

Negotiators from Russia and Ukraine today negotiated a solution to the conflict, but ultimately postponed their talks. Ukraine demands an end to the war and a withdrawal of Russian troops. Moscow is demanding that Kyiv recognize the annexed Black Sea peninsula of Crimea as Russian territory and the eastern Ukrainian separatist areas as independent states, and that Ukraine declare its neutrality.

After reading the Russian demands, “some of these demands are absolutely unacceptable for us, for example certain territorial demands,” Zhovkva stressed. Other points can be discussed, but only together “with a guarantee of security for Ukraine in the future”.
