Talks between the USA, Egypt, Israel and Qatar regarding a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip have so far come to an end without results. The New York Times reported, citing an unnamed Egyptian official, that the countries’ senior representatives had agreed to extend the talks by three days. They are now to be continued by lower-level officials. Israel’s delegation has already left.

The tenor of the discussions was “positive,” it was said. Egyptian President Abdel Fatah Al-Sisi, American CIA Director William Burns and Qatari Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed Bin Abdulrahman al-Thani took part in the talks. The aim was to agree a ceasefire for the Gaza Strip and to provide the civilian population with more aid.

Israel’s delegation led by the head of the Mossad secret service, David Barnea, was on its way back from Cairo, the Israeli newspaper “Times of Israel” reported on Wednesday night, citing a representative from Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office. The Israeli delegation was there to “listen” to the talks in the Egyptian capital. No new offer was made in Cairo, it said.

During a ceasefire last November, 105 hostages were released in return for 240 Palestinian prisoners. Egypt, Qatar and the USA had already mediated during this ceasefire. There are currently 134 people in the hands of Hamas, but according to Israeli estimates, at least 30 of them are no longer alive. According to media reports, the number of people killed might now be as high as 50. On Monday night, Israel’s military rescued two hostages in Rafah in the south of the Gaza Strip. Terrorists from Hamas and other extremist Palestinian groups abducted the people from Israel to the Gaza Strip on October 7th.
