The Taliban, the ruling force in Afghanistan, which is accelerating the oppression of women, has even banned women from entering outdoor restaurants this time. According to the AP on the 11th, Taliban authorities in Herat, western Afghanistan, recently began restricting women and family guests from entering the garden restaurant.
The Herat Provincial Ministry of Punishment and Punishment said it had closed the restaurant, saying that religious scholars and the general public had repeatedly raised objections to introduce restrictions. It also added that this measure applies to restaurants with parks or green spaces where men and women can mix and meet.
It is also known that Taliban authorities made this decision because they judged that women in the restaurants were not wearing the hijab properly.
“Even though it looks like a park, it was named a restaurant, and men and women were seated together,” said Ajizurahman Al-Muhajir, an executive of the Herat Provincial Poison and Punishment Department.
In August 2021, the Taliban returned to power in Afghanistan and since then banned education for women and banned access to parks and gyms. It also made it compulsory for women to wear clothes that cover their faces. Recently, a radio station targeting women was shut down for playing music during the Islamic fasting month of Ramadan.
