Afghanistan’s Taliban government has banned women from singing and reading aloud in public. New laws have been introduced that specifically focus on women’s activities.
The new laws have been approved by the head of the Taliban organization Hibatullah Akhundzada. The rules, announced on Wednesday, focus on issues related to daily life, public transport, music and mixing of men and women.
The new laws require women to wear a full hijab when they step out of the house in accordance with Sharia rules. The Ministry of Justice has stated that violations of the new rules can be punished with warnings, threats of divine punishment, verbal threats, confiscation of property and imprisonment from one hour to three days.
According to media reports, since coming back to power three years ago, this is the first time that the Taliban movement has formally announced measures regarding orders and prohibitions.
