If the pill can have many effects on the body of women, a study reveals that starting it very early would promote depression.
Numerous studies have already demonstrated the side effects of taking the pill on women. The most common are weight gain, mood swings or more irregular sleep than usual. While the physical effects are bothersome, the mental health ones can be even more devastating.
A few months ago, a study revealed that women might suffer more from depression if they used a hormonal IUD. However, two data are often discarded: the age at which the treatment began and the percentage of risks. However, with the pill, both can have a significant impact on mental health.
This is the alarming finding made by a study published in the scientific journal EurekAlert on June 12.
Age of patients at first pill taken into account to assess risk
For this study, the researchers used over 264,000 volunteers. They followed these women for a long time, especially during their adolescence. Then they observed in detail the age at which they started the pill, the appearance or not of depression…
Scientists then found that starting the pill during adolescence increased the risk of depression. Among the volunteers concerned, the risk of developing depression at some point in their lives was 130%. While among women who started the pill following age 18, the figure was lower. Nevertheless, it remained significant and was around 90%.
Beyond the risks linked to the age of the catch, the fact ofstopping this form of contraception continues to impact mental health.
A different impact in the event of stopping in women and in adolescents
Indeed, the researchers also analyzed the consequences of stopping the pill on women. And depending on their ages, the results differ. If women took the pill as an adult, stopping the contraceptive can help treat signs of depression. But if teenage girls take and stop treatment before adulthood, the effects may last.
This response of the body would be mainly due to the significant hormonal changes that young girls undergo during adolescence. Since the pill affects hormones, those of teenage girls can be even more upset than usual.
In fact, the imprint of the drug is more marked and the depression can be more difficult to treat. However, specialists do not want to ban the pill. They just want to highlight these elements to better warn patients and possibly offer an alternative.
