While long covid, a sequelae of COVID-19, is emerging as a social problem, a study has found that prescribing steroids to patients with COVID-19 can significantly lower the risk of death. Recently, according to the international scientific journal ‘Frontiers in Medicine’, researchers at the University of Florida published a study showing that steroids can reduce the risk of death in patients recovering from long covid.
The researchers followed up 1,207 patients who were hospitalized for COVID-19 for one year following discharge. The study found that patients who were prescribed anti-inflammatory steroids following hospitalization had a 51% reduced risk of death from a variety of causes, including severe inflammation. Archie G. Mannow III, University of Florida professor, said, “Steroid prescription for discharged COVID-19 patients should be included in the standard of care. It can be an indicator that can predict the health risks you experience.”
Most inflammations are concentrated at the site of infection. In the case of COVID-19, inflammation can occur everywhere, including the airways and heart. As a measure of the severity of systemic inflammation during hospitalization, the blood concentration of ‘C-reactive protein (CRP)’ secreted in response to signals from active immune cells was used. According to the study results, it was found that the blood level of CRP during hospitalization had a strong correlation with the severity of COVID-19. Patients with the highest levels of CRP, an inflammatory marker in the blood, during hospitalization had a 61% higher risk of dying within one year than those with the lowest levels.
Professor Manows also said, “After the onset of symptoms, it should be managed like chronic diseases such as heart failure or diabetes that continue to affect patients. added.
