Taking Action Against the Rapid Spread of Bedbugs in Lebanon: Monitoring Travelers from Europe

The head of the “Lebanese Social Medical Association” and the representative of the European-Middle Eastern International Medical Association in Lebanon, Professor Raif Reda, called on, in a statement, “the Lebanese government to take action to develop a plan to monitor travelers and those arriving from Europe in general, and France and Belgium in particular, following the rapid spread of bedbugs that arrived at Charles de Gaulle Airport.” And train stations, hotels and residential places, especially in France and currently in Belgium and elsewhere,” noting that “bedbugs reproduce at an amazing speed, as each insect lays a hundred eggs, and each egg turns into an insect and hides in clothes, bedding, bags, and other things.”

He called on the government to take the necessary precautions, by sterilizing the airport, placing heat devices above 55 degrees Celsius to sterilize bags without opening them, and asking arrivals to wash clothes and personal items with hot water at a temperature of at least sixty degrees Celsius, in their homes, while taking precautions when opening bags, otherwise these insects will move to the rooms. From one residential class to another and so on to the neighborhoods, paying attention to bedding, beds, wood openings and wooden furnishings. If this prevention is neglected, we will soon hear of the spread of bed bugs on a large scale in Lebanon, especially in light of the deteriorating health and economic conditions, reminding the state and everyone that an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.”
