DOUCHES

  • Kate Moss made her international breakthrough at the age of 16 as a Calvin Klein model.

  • This is how the Brit got to know the downsides of the fashion business very early on.

  • In an interview with “Desert Island Discs”, the 48-year-old now talks regarding her experiences as a teenage model.

  • “The photographer told me ‘take off your top’ and I took off my top. I was very shy at the time because of my body and he said, ‘Take your bra off,'” Moss says.

Today Kate Moss is considered one of the most successful models of all time. But the way to the fashion olympia was anything but easy. She got to know the dark side of the business early on – and is now speaking openly for the first time regarding the frightening experiences she had to make as a teenager.

On the BBC radio show «Desert Island Discs» Moss now reveals she had to shelter from an abusive photographer on one of her first lingerie shoots. At that time she was only 15 years old. “He said, ‘Take off your top’ and I took off my top. I was very shy at the time because of my body and he said, ‘Take off your bra’,” the supermodel said. She quickly realized that something was wrong and fled: “I packed my things and ran away.”

“I was skinny because I didn’t get anything to eat on a shoot”

But it didn’t stop there: A year later, in 1992, she had to pose topless with actor Mark Wahlberg (51) for a Calvin Klein campaign, photographed by star photographer Corinne Day. “She threatened me that if I kept my top on, I wouldn’t be booked for ‘Elle’,” Moss reveals, adding, “I was very vulnerable and scared. Then I was prescribed Valium.”

The then 16-year-old made her international breakthrough with the Calvin Klein campaign, but in addition to the downsides within the fashion business, Kate also had to struggle with the media. The model has always been accused of glorifying being thin, and she has been heavily criticized for her statement “Nothing tastes as good as being thin feels”.

«I take care of my models»

Rumors quickly arose that Kate was suffering from anorexia. However, the British woman always denied these allegations and made it clear once more in the most recent radio interview: “I was never anorexic. I’ve never been addicted to heroin. I was skinny because I didn’t get food on shoots and I’ve always been skinny.”

Meanwhile, Kate works as a model agent herself and also has her own daughter Lila (19) under contract. “I told her that she didn’t have to do anything that she didn’t want to,” she reveals. «I take care of my models. I make sure they’re with an agent when they’re filming, so there’s someone who dares to say if something isn’t appropriate.”
