Taiwan’s presidential election, which is showing signs of a proxy war between the United States and China, is underway today (13th).

In this election, which will be held from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. local time, voting will be held to elect the President, Vice President, and 113 legislators (members of the National Assembly).

Among Taiwan’s total population of 24 million, 19.55 million people aged 20 or older are eligible to vote.

Since the founding of Taiwan, the dictatorship of the Kuomintang government has continued, and a direct presidential system was implemented in 1996.

Since 2000, the Democratic Progressive Party and the National Party have each taken turns in power every eight years.

Meanwhile, this election is attracting global attention in that it is a proxy war between the United States and China.

Currently, the ruling party, the Democratic Progressive Party, is expressing its stance on democracy, pro-Americanism, and independence, while the opposition party, the Kuomintang, is showing a friendly stance toward China under the slogan ‘War or Peace?’

Over the past eight years when the Democratic Progressive Party has been in power, China has refused to engage in dialogue with Taiwan and has consistently staged military demonstrations in the waters around Taiwan.

On the other hand, the United States, which is in the midst of a power struggle with China, is concerned regarding a major setback in its Indo-Pacific strategy if the pro-China Nationalist Party takes power.

Therefore, it is predicted that if the National Party government takes office, pressure from the United States will be transmitted in a different way, and TSMC, the world’s largest foundry company and the core of the global semiconductor supply chain, may be hit.
