The election is over, the winner is clear: for the third time in a row, the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) will be the president in Taiwan. It is the group that, among the major parties on the island, emphasizes the independent path most strongly – which is why the People’s Republic of China also opposed the party in subtle and not so subtle ways during the election campaign. The fact that their candidate William Lai (or Lai Ching-te) is now president initially means continuity, and that is not the worst thing for the island’s 22 million inhabitants.
