According to the Fujian Maritime Security Administration, the Haixun 06, the largest maritime patrol vessel in the Taiwan Strait, was commissioned on July 11 in Fuzhou, capital of southeastern Fujian province. China).
The administration said Haixun 06 (“Maritime Patrol 06”) is the first large patrol/rescue vessel commissioned in the strait and also the most advanced vessel operated by the administration. It will be responsible for carrying out law enforcement patrols, monitoring maritime traffic, responding to emergencies, searching and rescuing ships and their crews, as well as extinguishing fires and managing pollution.
Meanwhile, the administration said, the Haixun 06 is expected to play an important role in ensuring the transportation of strategic materials and the security of crucial waterways, boosting maritime business in Fujian and building a strong maritime economy in China.
Xu Zengfu, director of administration, who spoke at a commissioning ceremony held on July 11 – the date which marked the 18th National China Sea Day – in Pingtan County in Fuzhou, stressed that the commissioning of the new vessel is an important step in modernizing his administration’s equipment and said the agency has now become capable of law enforcement on the high seas. He also said that, with the Haixun 06, the administration now has 60 patrol vessels.
Designed by China Ship Development and Design Center in Wuhan, a subsidiary of China Shipbuilding Industry Corp, the Haixun 06 is 128 meters long, 16 meters wide and has a full load displacement of 6,600 tons. Its maximum speed is about 23 knots, or about 43 km/h. It is capable of operating for up to 60 days without any resupply and covering more than 18,500 km in a single trip.
According to its designers, the Haixun 06 is also capable of sailing against strong waves and gale force winds. It can accommodate up to 200 people rescued from ships in distress and provide them with simple medical treatment. In addition, it is equipped with GPS and China’s Beidou satellite navigation system, which has good data collection and processing ability. It can finally carry a medium-weight helicopter, which will improve its effectiveness in search and rescue operations.
Construction of the vessel began in May 2019 at China State Shipbuilding Corp’s Wuchang Shipbuilding Industry in Wuhan, capital of central China’s Hubei Province. Liang Shiqing, general manager of the shipbuilder, said at the ceremony that his company has been building patrol vessels since the 1980s and has so far delivered more than 50 to Chinese maritime authorities.
