However, at the crown of the interest of Mrs. Rapti, who is particularly sensitive to social issues, seems to be the promotion and permanent strengthening of the Higher Schools of Tourism Education.

We are in the heart of tourism 2024. What are the messages for the course of Greek tourism so far?

We are going through a period of extremely positive messages for Greek tourism. According to official data from the Bank of Greece, during the period January-April 2024 travel receipts increased by 22% compared to the corresponding period in 2023 and amounted to 1.8 billion euros, while inbound arrivals increased by 20% respectively and amounted to 3.9 million travelers. The increase in arrivals and revenues confirms the dynamics that our country has developed, becoming one of the top destinations worldwide.

The new bill of the Ministry of Tourism was voted in the Parliament. Essentially, what is changing in tourism education?

With the proposed arrangements we further strengthen the institutional framework of tourism education and implement the fair demands of our students.

For the first time, we provide reduced travel costs to students of SAEK Tourism and ASTE in MMM, as well as the right to medical and nursing care, as well as a European sick card.

We foresee an agreement with the Ministry of Education for the supply of textbooks through the “Eudoxos” service and grant students a special student ID card.

It is important to be able to place – without exams – ASTE graduates in a University of Tourism Studies and continue their studies with a level 6 degree, offering a way out for academic development, postgraduates, doctorates and Erasmus.

For the first time, we are regulating electronic procedures for permanent recruitment in ASTE and SAEK Tourism, as well as a process for the development of permanent ASTE faculty members. We are covering the legislative gap for the recruitment of permanent educational staff at SAEK Tourism, in order to proceed with the first 9 approved recruitments. We regulate matters of placement of managers in ASTE and SAEK to cover the vacant positions.

Finally, we are modernizing the definition and legislation of the tour guide profession. With the new definition, the profession of tour guide is clearly defined and distinguished from the work of escorts, with the aim of both protecting the tour guides themselves and ensuring the quality of services provided to tourists.

Recently the Prime Minister referred to hypertourism. Is there really such a problem and how can it be avoided?

In the same interview, the prime minister emphasized that we must ensure that the development we achieve is sustainable, friendly to the environment and local communities. At the Ministry of Tourism we are working non-stop, with a plan, to ensure the conditions so that our tourism continues to be profitable for the destinations and the national economy, in modern terms, based on measure, quality and balance, increasing goodwill of the “Greece” brand. We are opening a new page for Greek tourism, the development of which is based on the sustainability and competitiveness of our destinations. In this direction, we have put up for public consultation, in collaboration with the Ministry of the Environment, the Special Spatial Framework for Tourism, which – in terms of sustainability – addresses the dangers of overtourism.
