Kochi ∙ Malayalee youths have introduced ‘foreign local liquor’ to Canada by experimenting with powders in the cage of Kerala’s native vat. Sajeesh Joseph from Kochi Vadutala and Ajith Padmakumar from Vaikom bottled the ‘native’ of Kerala in Canada under the brand ‘Taika’ which means tiger. Along with the name Taika, the labeling has been added as Artisan Arak in English and ‘Nadan Charayam’ in Malayalam. The back label of the bottle features the mountains of Kerala, an elephant, an old KSRTC bus and a coconut tree. It is currently sold in 750ml bottles through the distillery in Ontario, Canada and online.
Sajeesh and Ajith came to Canada years ago. Sajeesh’s experience as a chef and Ajith’s business experience as an entrepreneur and IT professional gave them the courage to present ‘Taika’. It was Sajeesh who discovered the codification of Vatucharaya that his grandfather told him regarding in the country and started the experiment in Canada during the covid period. Apart from the flavors of Kerala, dates, various fruits, spices and jaggery were included in the experiment. Those not available in Canada were delivered from Kerala. Good feedback when ‘tested’ by giving it to friends. The current flavor combination was confirmed following the experiment was repeated. The construction is done by obtaining government approvals and leasing the distillery. Taika has an alcohol content of 46 percent.
Ajith said that the aim is to brand ‘Taika Nadan Charayam’ with world class standards. As part of business expansion, there are plans to make Taika available in Liquor Control Board of Ontario (LCBO) stores and partner with restaurants across Canada. The aim is to export to markets including Kerala. Earlier, the Malayalis were also behind the alcohol that was brought to Canada under the name of Mandakini-Malabar Vat.
