At 25, Tadej Pogacar won his third consecutive Tour of Lombardy! In the last of the five “Monuments” of the season, the Slovenian escaped around thirty kilometers to win solo.
By beating the Italian Andrea Bagioli and the other Slovenian star Primoz Roglic, Pogacar is the third cyclist to win three years in a row in the “Classic of Dead Leaves”, the first since Fausto Coppi in 1949. The last rider to have won one of the five “monuments” three times in a row is the Italian Moreno Argentin, winner of Liège-Bastogne-Liège between 1985 and 1987.
17 victories in 2023
Pogacar set off on a descent around thirty kilometers from the finish. He regularly widened the gap on the group of pursuers where Bagioli and Roglic were. “Winning three times, for the second time here in Bergamo, it’s a dream come true, it was fantastic, I took advantage of the last kilometers, I had fun“, Pogacar said following the race.
This is Pogacar’s 17th victory of the season, the biggest total in the peloton, and the 63rd of his career, at only 25 years old. He completed a rich year with two Monuments to his name, the Tour of Flanders and the Tour of Lombardy, the Flèche Wallonne, the Amstel Gold Race and Paris-Nice. He also finished second in the Tour de France with two stage victories to boot.
