CLAUDIA: What is the Kitsch style? And what elements characterize them?
Ana Weege: The Kitsch style originally came from something tacky, but today it is seen as something that carries a lot of personality. Opposite to minimalism, this style offers total freedom of mixing. Prints, textures, styles, colors: everything together and mixed. The more information the better, without following regulations or aesthetic standards.
Why is it associated with tacky?
For escaping any regulations or technical coherence of application. Much has been heard regarding the new trend of quiet luxury, but in kitsch the fun lies in being bold and very extravagant. No rules.
How can we demystify this “cheesy” classification and appreciate the style?
First of all, the style needs to make sense for the protagonist. It really has to be part of what the resident identifies with. For me, a very courageous style without fear of judgement.
Working with colors and prints is really a very challenging art, but when done well, we come across something fun and full of personality. I believe that appreciation lies in always being something unusual and unique. It is very difficult in this style to see two rooms, for example, that are similar.
How to apply the trend in the kitchen? What elements cannot be missing?
Taking care in the choice of surface materials, such as applying unusual colors to the furniture, as well as exotic stones, special ceramics and lots of humor.
