JEDDAH: With consumer preferences for safer and healthier foods, farmers in Tabuk are switching to organic crop production. With the cooperation of the Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture and local farmers, Tabuk is becoming a model of sustainable agriculture.

Along with three farms in Duba and Abu Raqqa provinces, nine farms in Umluj and Al Waj provinces have also switched to organic production.

Twelve farms in the region are converting to fully organic farming practices, using animal and plant residues from improved production systems as natural fertilizers. This shift is in response to the growing demand for food products with high health value, prompting outlets to distribute and promote organic food products.

Organic farming avoids synthetic inputs such as chemical fertilizers and pesticides, aiming to produce safe and healthy food with a focus on environmental sustainability. On the Saudi Organic Food Day, observed annually on November 11, authorities highlight the admirable changes in the agricultural sector and their positive effects on human health, vitality and overall well-being. Food security is a priority in Saudi Arabia, and sustainable agriculture is receiving widespread attention. As part of Vision 2030, the country has formulated plans to promote organic farming and increase the use of technology and water conservation methods.

The sustainable farm in Wadi Bin Hashbal, in the southwestern Asir region, has been listed in the Guinness World Records as the largest of its kind in the world. Treated water is used to irrigate crops planted in an area of 3.2 million square meters. Irrigation operations are carried out in several stages and are supervised by responsible specialists. As a result, the impact on fresh water sources is reduced and water management practices are promoted, according to the official Saudi news agency.
