Tablet-optimized Android 12L to be released at the end of this year

‘Android 12L’, which can be optimized and used efficiently for large screens such as tablets and foldable devices, will distribute updates to some products from Samsung, Lenovo, and Microsoft at the end of this year. Android 12L beta was first released in October of last year, and it was predicted that it would be officially released in 2022.

The Android OS has been criticized for not being able to take advantage of a large screen like a tablet. In addition, as foldable devices that expand when unfolded recently have been released one following another, the need for an optimized Android OS has grown.

In Android 12L, the UI is divided into two-column layout for large screens such as notifications, quick settings, lock screen, home screen, etc., so more information can be viewed at once and easier to use. Multitasking is also convenient. You can register your favorite apps in the task bar at the bottom of the screen in advance and drag the icon to the top to use it as a split screen. It also provides a compatibility mode that allows you to view and run apps optimized for smartphones on the big screen.

Android 12L beta is already installed and available on Lenovo P12 Pro tablets, and development tools and simulators for developers have already been distributed. It is expected to be available later this year on Microsoft’s Surface Duo 2, Samsung’s Galaxy Tab, and Z-Fold. The release of the Android tablet-optimized OS is expected to increase competitiveness with Apple’s iPad and provide an alternative.
