We’ve known for some time now that Apple’s new Watch Ultra is tough, but in practice the gadget even seems pretty much indestructible. A YouTuber who attacked it with a hammer, was even at his expense and must look for a new table.
The brand new Watch Ultra is with its price of 999 euros not only the most expensive smartwatch marketed by Apple, but also the most robust. This is why it is housed in a titanium case and its digital dial is protected by ultra-resistant sapphire crystal. At TechRax, a well-known YouTube channel for its product durability testing, we wanted to know just how rugged the Watch Ultra was.
Subjected to tremors
As usual, this kind of process began with the good old drop test on a hard floor from a height of regarding one meter. But even if the watch crashed on the glass dial side, it barely showed anything. There were admittedly a few very light scratches visible on the case, but the glass dial came out completely undamaged.
Next came the shaking test of the Watch Ultra in a glass jar filled with nuts, nails and other sharp objects. Main conclusion: the strap provided (in our case an orange one) became relatively quickly… dirty.
Hammer Square
Finally, TechRax gave the Watch Ultra – directly to the glass dial – a few solid hammer blows. The gadget came out fine: no scratches, and all functions in working order. But the hammer ‘attacks’ nevertheless claimed a (first) victim: the table on which the endurance test took place was heavily damaged.
Continuing the hammer blows somewhat further, the Watch Ultra also had to admit defeat: the case was still and still intact, but the electronic part was ruined. In any case, the man with the hammer mightn’t believe his eyes when he realized that the outside of the watch was not damaged. ‘Don’t do it on my watch!’, he declared, slightly irritated, before continuing to pound like deaf on the Watch Ultra which, this time, completely gave up the ghost. Be that as it may, these particular conditions are not ready to be encountered by the user, not even those who practice the most extreme sports…
