Székesfehérvár City Portal – Gyulai Memorial

In Székesfehérvár, the Regional Athletic Center hosted the István Gyulai Memorial – Hungarian Athletics Grand Prix on Tuesday followingnoon, where athletes from 47 countries competed. Many Olympic and world champions and diamond league winners were also there. This year’s results were not as outstanding as last year before the Athletics WC in Budapest, it was felt that the competitors were already focusing on the Olympics in Paris.

In Bregyo, Székesfehérvár hosted the prestigious competition for the 11th time.

Bence Halász placed fourth in the final of the men’s hammer throw at the Gyulai István Memorial international athletics competition.

The 2024 Gyulai István Memorial – Hungarian Athletics Grand Prix began in great heat with the men’s hammer throw. This year, the winner of last year’s world championship, Ethan Katzberg, won with 81.87 meters.

It was an exciting competition in the women’s long jump, which Natalia Linares won with a new individual record of 6.87 meters. In the men’s long jump competition, the Olympic, world and European champion Miltiadis Tentoglou won with a result of 8.23 ​​meters.

The official opening of the competition took place following the women’s long jump. The mayor of Székesfehérvár András Cser-Palkovics greeted the participants of the competition, as he said “it is a great honor for us that the Gyulai Memorial will be held in Fehérvár once more this year.”

The competition was opened by Miklós Gyulai, the president of the Hungarian Athletics Association. Shot putter Anita Márton was also welcomed at the competition, who announced her retirement last fall.

Olympic bronze medalist, World Championship silver medalist, world indoor champion and European champion shot putter Yevgeniya Kolodko, who was suspended for a doping violation, was presented with her 2014 European Championship silver medal in Fehérvár by the president of the athletics association.

Tamari Davis was the fastest in the women’s 100m sprint with a time of 11.00s. Kishane Thompson, who has the best result in the world this year, won the men’s 100m flat race with a time of 9.91 seconds. Olympic champion Jasmine Camacho-Quinn won the women’s 100m hurdles with a time of 12.47s.

The winner of the men’s 3000m with a new individual record is the German Florian Bremm with a time of 7:43.61.

In the women’s 3000m steeplechase, American Logan Jolly crossed the finish line first with a time of 9:29.75.

The new European champion, Leonardo Fabbri, confidently won the men’s shot put with a result of 22.43 meters. In the men’s discus throw, the world record holder, Mykolas Alekna, won with a result of 70.20m, and in the high jump, last year’s Ukrainian champion, Dmytro Nikitin, won with 2.24m.

Bence Halász finished fourth, Petra Bánhidi-Farkas eighth

Among the Hungarian Olympians, hammer thrower Bence Halász finished fourth, and long jumper Petra Bánhidi-Farkas finished eighth. Last year’s world champion, Canadian Ethan Katzberg, confidently won the men’s hammer throw competition ahead of second-place Ukrainian Mihajlo Kohan and third-placed Polish Wojciech Nowicki. Bence Halász improved gradually, throw by throw, but this time he had no chance for the podium. Among the other Hungarian Olympic participants, Dániel Rába reached the final and finished seventh with a result of 73.20 m, while Donát Varga was 11th with 69.33 m.

The female long jumpers had an exciting and intense competition. In the end, Colombia’s Natalia Linares triumphed with her personal best in the last series, ahead of Jamaican Ackleia Smith and American Quanesha Burks. Petra Bánhidi-Farkas had a consistent performance, only her first jump was under 6 meters, that too by a single centimeter. Among the other Hungarian participants, Diána Lesti finished 9th with 6.22 m, while Anastázia Nguyen finished tenth with three invalid attempts.

The competition was broadcast live by M4 and the wonderful drone images of Bregyó and its surroundings were also shown.

Julian Alfred won the women’s 200m with a time of 22.16 seconds, setting his best result this year. And for the men, following 2021, André De Grasse won once more in the men’s 200m flat with a season’s best result of 19.98 seconds.

Kemi Adekoya won the women’s 400m hurdles with a time of 54.13 seconds.

The men’s 400m flat race brought success to Steven Gardiner once more this year. The Bahamian Olympic champion finished with a time of 44.50 seconds. Trey Cunningham won the men’s 110m hurdles with a time of 13.21s.

The Spiriev Bozsidár award, which goes to the best of the competition according to the absolute evaluation, was presented to the winner of the discus event, Lithuanian Mykolas Alekna, by his namesake son, Attila Spiriev, sports director.
