‘SZ’: Law should force electricity suppliers to reduce prices | 02/28/22

BERLIN (dpa-AFX) – According to a media report, the federal government wants to oblige electricity suppliers by law to pass on the planned reduction in the green electricity levy to their customers. The draft law requires municipal utilities and electricity providers to reduce the prices before sales tax “by the amount by which the surcharge (…) will be reduced on July 1, 2022,” reports the “Süddeutsche Zeitung” (Monday). A simultaneous price adjustment for another reason is also prohibited.

Households currently pay 3.7 cents per kilowatt hour of what is known as the EEG surcharge, which adds up to a good 100 euros a year for an average four-person household. The coalition recently decided to abolish the levy on July 1, earlier than planned. From then on, the federal government will bear the costs for the expansion of green electricity. The energy industry had warned once morest legal interventions in bilateral contractual relationships./and/DP/zb
