The SYRIZA Executive Committee on Saturday (6.7.2024) was marked by sharp and nail-biting between the presidential and the dissidents, but in general the tones were kept low. However, everything shows that the autumn appointment (October 4-6) for the conference and the KE, which will precede it, will be much warmer.
Yesterday, the recommendation of the Secretary of the SYRIZA Central Committee was passed and the amendments tabled by the minority regarding the holding of two referendums were rejected. One for constitutional changes and a second for the center-left.
At the same time, the official leader of the opposition, Stefanos Kasselakis, addressed a stern warning to the dissidents saying that “let us all agree that within the institutions you can say what you want. But if the next day you are on a public platform and contradict the spirit and decisions of the party and the organs without observing the Statute that separates the personal position from the party position, then obviously the members of the organs and its President should take a position Know that this is not a threat, it is common sense.”
At the same time, the president of SYRIZA made the first move for cooperation with PASOK by proposing, as he said, to the president of the movement, whoever he is, to work with him with experts and parliamentarians in order to work on the two issues he highlights SYRIZA: the private debt and the excess profits of the Banks.
The ideas presented yesterday by Stefanos Kasselakis regarding the changes that should be made in his party opened a new cycle of debates regarding what kind of political body SYRIZA should be from the fall and following the constitutional conference.
In fact, the official opposition leader gave a preview of how he imagines the new SYRIZA, while the paradox in history is that while he appeared conciliatory to talk regarding unity, then addressing his comrades, he told them, in his own way, that will abolish them.
Because his proposals had this character. As the KE said, it will become a national council and the members will be reduced from 300 to 201. It will be attended ex officio by 20 Coordinators, 20 Deputy Coordinators of the Regional Member Committees and will meet only twice a year.
The Political Secretariat will be a body composed of the party president, the organizational coordinator, the President of the KO, the director and the Secretary of the KO. This body will also include 7 deputies and coordinators.
The interest in this story is that these executives will be judged on their efficiency and will either remain in the body or be replaced by other executives. This will also apply to the deputies who will take part in the Political Council alternately.
Stefanos Kasselakis, among others, referred to the changes he is thinking of making and which concern the abolition of party organizations and the implementation of digital assemblies, intra-party referendums and the abolition of Prefectural committees.
Several executives were talking regarding constitutional changes, which alter the partisan and political orientation of the party. Given, however, that all parties are waiting for these proposals to be debated in the relevant statute committee, the debate was postponed for the next period.
Black money and the right to the other point of view
Stefanos Kasselakis spoke regarding the changes he proposes, making, however, a big admission.
“I will make you sad, but we are not a normal party of power”, said Stefanos Kasselakis and added: “The voters recognized it correctly in 2019, when they gave us 31.5%, shouting at us at the same time “CHANGE EVERYTHING!”. And for the same reason they knocked us down to 17.8%, while we were an opposition party and supposedly had no attrition.”
However, despite the fact that the proposals presented by the leader of the official opposition made a sensation, the discussion in the KE moved around other issues, such as black money, the liquidation of the party and the center-left, but also the right to the other point of view.
The dissidents, for their part, withdrew the original text by submitting two amendments concerning the two referendums on the party’s initiatives for the center-left and the constitutional changes.
For this matter, Stefanos Kasselakis stated that “convergences must be made transparently, preserving the autonomy of the party formations”.
As for deals behind closed doors, he said they are futile, speaking of the union of… the goat and the stag, “with all it will do is the stag, the synonym of ridiculous”, while commenting with humor “you saw how much my Greek improved.”
Olga Gerovasili replied, however, to the official opposition leader that: “There is a request from society to cooperate with the other progressive forces. No one talked regarding liquidation. Facebook posts do not express political positions. They are analyses, opinions”.
The second topic that occupied the proceedings was the finances of SYRIZA with the former financial director Thymios Georgopoulos attacking the president of SYRIZA saying that it is “unacceptable to make such attacks, targeting the former president of SYRIZA, Alexis Tsipras”.
